Starry Night is one of those paintings you have to see in person to really get the full impact of. I was lucky enough to see it at MoMA quite a few years back, it was incredible. I know I always feel kind of empty when I finish a campaign or get a book out. I always felt I would feel a little more something...but I'm just thinking about how I have to get the next thing done.

Van Gogh's paintings in general are meant to be seen up close in person. The photos never do them justice because it's hard to capture how three dimensional the globs of paint actually are and how when you look at it from different angles, different shadows happen. It's almost sculptural.

Thinking about having to get the next thing done is such a mood. It's like "okay I'm done worrying about the campaign that just ended, now it's time to worry about making the next thing!" It's stressful, yo.

Thank you for sharing this! I had the good fortune of stumbling upon a Van Gogh exhibit on vacation last year, and I’m hoping to see more of his paintings in New York in October.

I think each person has to come to their own definition of success on their own terms instead of relying on those given to us by capitalism, like fame or monetary success. It’s part of why I’m grateful to start making strides in my creative work later in life, because I’ve already let go of so many ideas other people said I should have. I hope that makes sense. I’m sorry for going on so long.

No need to apologize! I always appreciate hearing your thoughts.

Trying to figure out what "success" means has always pulled me in a few different directions. On one hand, yes it's nice to think about success in terms of "am I happy with what I've made?" but really capitalism does put so much pressure that I'm like "I spent months working on this thing and made the equivalent of $7.00 an hour. Oh no." It's definitely why I started looking into finding a day job because I think I'll feel more "successful" at comics if I'm not relying on it as a sole source of income.

But who knows? We'll see what happens.
